How often should you clean your personal every-day items?
We, at TidyChoice know a lot about keeping homes clean. We also wanted to find out how much cleaning our personal items need. So, we did some research to find out what the experts think.
Phones: Clean every day
Believe it or not, a recent study by research firm Dscout found that on average we touch our phones 2,617 time every day, leaving us to the risk of being exposed to 7,000+ types of bacteria. Although most are harmless, some are not. It is indeed highly recommendable to clean your phone everyday with an antibacterial wipe.
Bras: Clean every 2-3 wears
Good news ladies: if you don’t know it already, bras don’t need to be washed after every wear. If you’ve had a particularly sweaty day, you might want to wash them after just a wear.
Over-washing can quickly damage the elastic, that’s why washing them after every two wears, possibly three, is ideal.
Handbags and wallets/purses: Clean once a week
Bags carry nasty germs (well, it’s no wonder when you consider how often they are placed on the floors of trains, pubs and even public toilets). Plus, your wallet/purse is full of harmful bacteria on coins, banknotes and credit cards.
To get rid of the muck, clean your bag and purse once a week with alcohol-free baby wipes or check the label to see if they can be machine-washed.
Jeans: Clean every 6 months
Okay, despite the shock (if at all), we looked into this one very carefully. Although extreme, David Hieatt, founder of Hiut denim, suggests washing jeans after at least 6 months to have them in tip top condition.
Microbiologists even say that there’s no harm in never washing your jeans from a health perspective as long as you’re not working in an environment that needs to be sterile (i.e. hospital).
Pyjamas: Clean every 2 wears
Even if you don’t realise it, when you sleep you tend to sweat. If you don’t wash your jim-jams regularly, a nasty amount of bacteria will be left and health problems from acne to urine infections might result. According to experts, to keep the grime at bay, you should wash your nightwear after every two wears, or at the very least, once a week.
At the end of the day, it is up to you to decide how often you keep your personal items clean. We, at TidyChoice, are here to support and help you make a tidy and clean decision.
